No one's hiring but would like to submit resume. What's the proper way to do it?

No job openings in my field (RHIT) but I would still like to submit my resume to the places I'm interested in working for. Most are small physician's offices or clinics and do not have a web presence. My plan is to just walk in with my resume and ask (while handing it to the receptionist) if they are accepting resumes or applications. Do you think this is acceptable or is there a more appropriate way to do this when they're not advertising any job openings? Thanks.
